You only need your bill to get an estimate. The rest fine-tunes it.
- Monthly electricity bill
- The rupee amount you pay in an average month. This is the easiest way to size a system, because it tells us roughly how many units you use. Use a normal month, not your highest summer bill.
- Monthly units (kWh)
- If you have your bill handy, the units consumed is the most accurate input. Look for “units consumed” or “consumption” on the bill. Enter this instead of the rupee amount if you can.
- Fixed charges and electricity tax
- Your bill is not only for the power you use. It also has a monthly fixed charge based on your sanctioned load, plus electricity tax on the energy charge. Solar does not remove the fixed charge, so we strip it and the tax out before sizing, and we never show it as a saving. Leave the tick on and adjust the fixed charge to match your bill if you can see it.
- Property type
- Homes are eligible for the PM Surya Ghar rooftop subsidy. Commercial and industrial connections are not, but they usually claim accelerated depreciation instead, which the calculator does not show.
- System type
- On-grid is the common choice and needs no battery. Hybrid adds a battery so chosen loads stay on during a power cut. Off-grid runs fully on solar and batteries and gets no subsidy.
- City
- Sunlight hours differ across Karnataka. North Karnataka gets a little more sun than Bengaluru or the coast, so the same roof there generates slightly more.
- Shade on the roof
- Trees, water tanks, parapets, and nearby buildings cut generation. Be honest here — heavy shade for part of the day makes a real difference to the estimate.
- Available roof area
- Optional. If you enter it, we tell you whether your roof can fit the system the bill suggests. As a guide, allow about 100 sq ft of shadow-free space per kW.
